Ancestors of NANCY SUE RICHARDS

Notes

4. FRANK EUGENE RICHARDS SR.

FRANK EUGENE RICHARDS SR. WAS BORN NOVEMBER 27, 1883 AND PASSED AWAY ON MAY 7, 1962. HE WAS 79 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH; HE IS BURIED AT THE MONTICITO CEMETERY, AT 24145 BARTON ROAD, LOMA LINDA, CALIFORNIA 92354. HE IS LOCATED IN THE AREA CALLED "GRAND VIEW" SECTION 371, SPACE #5. FRANK SR. WAS ENGLISH, AND EMMA WAS GERMAN.
FRANK EUGENE RICHARDS SR.: HIS FATHER WAS JOSEPH EDWARD RICHARDS AND HIS MOTHER WAS PARMELIA (WISHON) RICHARDS. THERE ARE NOT MANY DATES OF BIRTHS OR DEATHS ON MOST OF THEM. FRANK SR. HAD THREE OTHER BROTHER AND ONE SISTER.

APPROXAMENTLY IN THE YEAR 1900-1915 MAYBE EVEN MUCH LONGER, FRANK AND EMMA OWNED THEIR OWN DELI-BAKERY-GROCERY IN MONTABELLO, CA. THEY HAD A BIG SIGN IN THE FRONT OF THE STORE THAT READ "DELICAEESSEN & GROCERY F. RICHARDS". FRANK MANAGED IT AND EMMA DID MOST THE BAKING OF THE PIES AND BREADS. SHE WAS A WONDERFUL COOK AND BAKER. THEY DID HIRE ANOTHER LADY TO COME IN AND HELP EMMA WITH THE BAKING ONCE THE BUSINESS REALLY TOOK OFF.

ALSO FRANK SR.OWNED HIS OWN BARBER SHOP IN POMONA, CALIFORNIA IN THE EARLY 1920'S.  FRANK JR. (LITTLE FRANK) AND BILL WERE JUST SMALL BOYS. THE SHOP WAS VERY NEAR THE HOUSE YET ON THE MAIN STREE, (BACK THEN YOU DIDIN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT LOTS OF TRAFFIC). BILL AT THE AGE OF 3 HAD A HEAD FULL OF LONG CURLES THAT EMMA DID NOT WANT TO HAVE CUT. ONE DAY LITTLE FRANK AND BILL WALKED OVER TO THE BARBERSHOP TO VISIT THEIR DAD. AS ALWAYS THE BOYS CLIMBED INTO THE BARBER CHAIRS TO VISIT AND HAVE A LOLLIPOP. WELL ON THIS ONE DAY, BILL HAD CLIMBED UP AND SAT DOWN. FRANK SR. GOT THE CLIPPERS AND CHOPPED AWAY. LEAVING A NICE CLEAN VERY SHORT HAIRCUT. WHEN THE TWO BOYS RETURNED HOME EMMA WAS SO UPSET THAT ALL SHE COULD DO WAS CRY. SHE WAS ANGRY AT BIG FRANK FOR DAYS.

ALSO EMMA MANAGED THE BIG APARTMENT COMPLEX THERE IN POMONA THAT THEY LIVED IN DURNING THE TIME FRANK WORKED IN HIS BARBERSHOP. THEY LIVED THERE RENT-FREE PLUS SHE ALSO GOT PAID.

FRANK SR. AND EMMA PACKED THEIR BELONGS AND THE CHILDREN AND MADE A MOVE FROM POMONA TO FONTANA, CALIFORNIA. FRANK SR. DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE. SO, AT THE AGE OF 12, FRANK JR. (LITTLE FRANK) DID THE DRIVING ON THIS MOVE.  IT WAS HERE THAT FRANK SR. WORKED AT "SNYDERS MARKET" AS THE HEAD BUTCHER. HE WORKED THERE TILL HE RETIRED. EMMA WORKED FOR HER SISTER BERTIE IN HER STORE, THE "PIONEER RUG AND MATTRESS" IN SAN BERNARDINO.

MANY YEARS AFTER GRANDMA EMMA PASSED AWAY. RUTH, DAVE AND EMMA MOVED INTO THE FAMILY HOUSE ON MERRILL STREET IN FONTANA, CALIFORNIA.GRANDPA (FRANK SR.) MOVED IN WITH MY PARENTS FRANK JR. AND MARY. FRANK SR. HAD SURGERY FOR A GROUTH CALLED A "GOITER" IN THE FRONT OF HIS NECK. THEY HAD TO REMOVE IT. MY MOTHER MARY TOOK CARE OF GRANDPA DURNING THAT TIME. IT BECAME VERY OVEREHELMING FOR HER WITH HIM AND HER 8 CHILDREN SHE HAD AT HOME. THIS WAS WHEN DOROTHY WAS JUST AN INFANT. SO UNCLE BILL (DAD'S BROTHER) AND HIS WIFE ANNA TOOK GRANDPA IN AND CARED FOR HIM TILL ANNA COULD NOT DO IT ANY MORE. THEN HE WENT BACK TO THE FAMILY HOUSE AND LIVED WITH RUTH AND DAVE TILL GRANDPA PASSED AWAY IN 1962.

MY MOTHER MARY SAYS THAT SHE AND GRANDMA EMMA SPENT A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER. THAT EMMA WAS THE MOST HONEST SWEET NICE AND CHARMING PERSON SHE HAD MET. SHE HAD NEVER HEARD EMMA TELL A LIE TO ANYONE.

FRANK SR. AND EMMAS CHILDREN ARE:

6) EMMA WAS PREGNANT AGAIN AND THE DOCTOR TOLD HER SHE WAS DIABETIC. THAT THEY WERE GOING TO ABORT THE BABY, IF THEY DIDN'T, BOTH SHE AND THE BABY WOULD DIE. SHE WAS ONLY A FEW MONTHS ALONG; EMMA TOOK THIS VERY HARD AND WENT THROUGH A STAGE OF DEPRESSION FOR A SEVERAL MONTHS.

GRANDPA SMOKED A PIPE. HE HAD A SISTER (EDITH) THAT WOULD COME TO VISIT THEM EVERY 6 MONTHS AND WOULD STAY FOR A WEEK AT A TIME.

HAUNTING SAID THAT TOOK PLACE:

Loma Linda - Monticito grave yard - Witnesses report a ghost dressed in white at 2:00 am and don't look at the gate but you will hear something behind you like a voice. But if you turn back at the gate it disappears and at Halloween you see a fog at night.

I want to caution you all that some information found on the Internet with regard to Warnaar Hornbeck's ancestors is TOTALLY unproven and not to be relied on. At the Rootsweb World Connect site I found several submitters on Warnaar Hornbeck and a few of them gave ancestors for him. Let me say it again so there is no doubt - Warnaar Hornbeck's parents and grandparents and any other ancestors are TOTALLY unproven and unknown to anyone as far as I know! These unfounded Internet submissions greatly disturb me for obvious reasons. Other Hornbeck Hunters rely on and believe such submissions as fact when they are NOT proven. I urge you not to rely on the material you find on the Internet regarding Warnaar Hornbeck's ancestors. VERY FEW people HAVE actually conducted research in Europe in an attempt to PROVE Warnaar Hornbeck's ancestors TO NO AVAIL.

6. JOHN ALVIN PARTAIN

JOHN ALVIN PARTAIN ID 115701 REFERENCE NUMBER 15705, MALE,BORN 15 MARCH 1891 IN ARKANSAS. HE IS IN THE 1900 CENSUS MORGAN TOWNSHIP, CLEBURNE COUNTY, ARKANSAS. DEATH 19 NOV 1971 IN NEW HOPE,SPIRO, LE FLORE COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, USA. SSN# 556-22-4229 ISSUED IN CALIFORNIA ABT 1936 CALIFORNIA, US. RESIDENCE: 1971 STIGLER, HASKELL COUNTY, OKLAHOMA USA. FATHER JOHN THOMAS PARTAIN BORN 6 DEC 1866 IN ARKANSAS, USA. MOTHER JULIA E. MAXWELL BORN 1868 IN ARKANSAS, USA.

John Alvin Partain 556-22-4229 was the second of 10 children born to John Thomas and Julia Partain. He was born in Settlement, Arkansas March 15, 1891 and died at Stigler, Oklahoma November 19, 1971 at the age of 80. John was 12 years old when the family moved from Arkansas to Spiro, Oklahoma. His mother died when he was 16 and two years later his father married Etta Elliott. John and Etta did not get along well at all and he soon left home. During his late teen years, John stayed on the move. He had some dogs and hunted and fished and lived off the land part of the time. He would go over to McAllister, Oklahoma and join up with people following the wheat harvest. This would carry him as far North as Canada. When that was finished he would follow the corn harvest or he would go over to Muskogee, Oklahoma and work at whatever jobs were available. He rode the rails for tansportation and some times he went by horseback.

On December 18, 1916, John married Lena Ruth Watson. Lena was born in Hartford, Missouri, March 26, 1894, and lived there until she was 11 years old. At that time (1905) her parents moved to Spiro, Oklahoma. John Thomas and Julia Partain lived in the next block and the two families became friendly neighbors.

When Lena's family left Spiro they moved to Vinita, Oklahoma, then on to Claremore, Oklahoma. They bought a home in Claremore and Lena's father worked in a creamery, did farm work, and helped clear land. Lena wrote to John and his sister, Ollie, during the time they lived in Claremore.

John and a buddy named Lon Dabney went to Skiatook, Oklahoma to join the service. Lon joined but John changed his mind and went to work for the phone company in Skiatook. He would go to Claremore on weekends to visit the Watson family.

When Lena was about 17 her family moved to Iowa. John was following the harvest and shucking corn and when his work took him close enough he would always visit Lena and her folks and spend his weekends with them. The Watson family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma when Lena was 19 or 20 and she went to work for the Muskogee Wholesale Company. John lived in Spiro at this time and would visit as often as he could. They would visit medicine shows for entertainment or, sometimes, hypnotic shows. One time they saw a man hypnotized in a casket that was in a store window. Forty-eight hours later they went back to see him awakened, and he was hurried away to get food and drink.
When Lena was about 22 she took a bus from Muskogee to Bokoshe and John took a bus from Spiro to Bokoshe and they were married. They made their home in Spiro.

Children born to John A. and Lena Partain:
1-Glenn Alvin Born September 6, 1918 in Spiro died april 22, 2005, in spiro, Oklahoma. he was laid to rest at 10 am on monday april 25, 2005, by the mallory martin funeral home chapel in spiro, in the "new hope cemetery" Spiro, OkLahoma. Officiation: Mr. Jim Duvree, Pallbearers: Richard Partain, Randy Partain, Jim Stubblefield, Sam Stubblefield, Allen Woelerton, Tim Palmer & Randy Stulttle.Glen was a life member of the American Legion, a member of the VFW #4884, AFL_CIO of California, and Nra and a member of the Church of Christ. He loved antique cars and tractors.

2-Arthur Thomas Born April 15,1920 died Nov.29, 2001 Buried in Green Acres Cemetery Bloomington, Ca.
3-Mary Mae Richards Born Oct. 3, 1921
4-Flossie Marie Evans Born July 25, 1924

In October of 1919 John, along with his brother Arthur, purchased land on Bokoshe Mountain. John and Lena moved back to Spiro where Arthur, Flossie and Mary were born.

Arthur was born at John Thomas Partain's house. The place bordered property John had bought. John and Lena's home was built just before Mary was born in 1921. The window and doorframes and finishing were completed after they moved in as they needed to be in the house before the new baby arrived.

JOHN AND LENA RAISED ONE MILK COW, TWO TEAMS OF MULES, CHICKENS, PIGS AND HOGS, COTTON, IRISH POTATOS, CORN, WHEAT, OATS, PEANUTS, "TRUCK-PATCH" WITH VEGTABLE'S, WATERMELLONS AND MANY OTHER FRUITS, FRUIT TREES-APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, PEACH'S, CHERRY'S AND BERRY'S.
MARY PARTAIN RICHARDS-JOHN'S DAUGHTER, EXPLAINS SOME OF THE FARMING JOBS. ONCE THE COTTON SEED HAD BEEN PLANTED AND WAS READY FOR HARVEST TIME. DADDY HAD HIRED HANDS TO HELP ALONG WITH THE REST OF OUR FAMILY. WE WOULD PICK THE COTTON OFF THE BOWLS. IT TORE OUR HANDS ALL UP EVEN WITH GLOVES ON. WE WOULD HAVE LONG SCRATCHES UP AND DOWN OUR ARMS. MAMA WOULD DOCTOR US UP AT NIGHT BEFORE BED. I REMEMBER WORKING OUT THERE AND LOOKING UP AT DADDY AND ASKING HIM "DO YOU HAVE TO GROW THIS STUFF"? HE SAID, "YES SISTER", (THAT'S WHAT THEY ALL CALLED ME), THIS WILL HELP US THROUGH THE WINTER. I DID NOT ENJOY THIS PART OF FARMING, BUT I DID ENJOY THE POTATOE FIELDS.
DADDY HAD BIG PLOWS THAT DUG THE POTATOE'S UP OUT OF THE GROUND AND THAT LAYED THEM TO THE SIDE.WE ALL HAD WALKED BEHIND THE PLOW WITH BASKETS ON OUR ARMS. WE BENT OVER AND PICKED UP AS MANY POTATOE'S TO FILL THE BASKET, THEN WE TOOK IT OVER TO THE GRADER. THIS WOULD SEPERATE THE POTATE'S INTO SIZE GROUPS AND THEN THEY WERE BAGGED.
MARY AND FLOSSIE TELL STORIES ABOUT THEIR DADDY, JOHN ALVIN. WHEN HE AND UNCLE HOMER (LENA'S BROTHER), WOULD GET TOGETHER THEY WOULD DRIVE EACH OTHERS CHILDREN CRAZY. THEY WOULD POKE FUN AND TEAS, TILL SOMEONE ENDED UP CRYING. ALL OF UNCLE HOMER'S KIDS WOULD PROVOKE DADDY INTO DOING OR SAYING SOMETHING TO MAKE THEM MAD. THEN US KIDS WOULD DO THE SAME TO UNCLE HOMER. THIS ONE DAY. HOMER HAD BEEN TALKING TO MAMA, AND I (MARY) WOULD NOT LEAVE UNCLE HOMER ALONE, I JUST KEPT BUGGING HIM. WHEN WE WENT OUTSIDE, HE GRABBED ME BY MY KNEES AND HELD ME UPSIDE DOWN AND STUCK MY HEAD IN A BIG MUD PUDDLE. I WAS SO MAD AT HIM. MAMA SAID, "WELL, NOW MAYBE YOU WILL LEAVE HIM ALONE!", THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR, AS SOON AS THEY LEFT MAMA WASHED MY HAIR.
UNCLE HOMER'S OLDEST BOY GEORGE, HE ALWAYS HAD A WAY OF GETTING BACK AT DADDY FOR TEASING HIM, ONE DAY HE HAD GONE TO FAR THOUGH. WE HAD GONE TO THEIR HOME AND DADDY MADE GEORGE SO MAD, THAT WHEN WE PULLED AWAY FROM THEIR HOUSE, GEORGE PICKED UP A BIG ROCK AND THREW IT THROUGH THE BACK WINDOW OF THE TRUCK. BOY, WAS DADDY MAD AND HE NEVER LET GEORGE LIVE THAT DOWN, GEORGE WOULD GO HIDE WHEN EVER WE WENT TO THEIR HOUSE AFTER THAT.
UNCLE HOMER AND HIS WIFE ALWAYS HAD A BABY AT THEIR HOME WHEN WE WERE YOUNG. DADDY WOULD TAKE THE BABY AND HOLD IT UP HIGH SO THE KIDS COULDN'T REACH IT. AS WE WOULD LEAVE TO GO HOME, DADDY WOULD SAY HE WAS TAKING THE BABY WITH HIM. THE OTHER KIDS WOULD YELL AND HANG ON DADDY AND TRY TO REACH TO GRAB THE BABY, (OF COURSE HE WAS ONLY KIDDING) BUT, ALL THE KIDS WOULD BE CRYING AS WE PULLED AWAY FROM THEIR HOUSE. POOR MAMA WOULD TELL DADDY, "I DON'T KNOW WHY BEULAH EVEN LETS US COME OVER THE WAY YOU CARRY ON". BUT THEN THEY WOULD COME TO OUR HOUSE AND UNCLE HOMER WOULD DO THE SAME THING TO US KIDS.
YOU COULD NEVER DO THIS ONE TODAY AND GET AWAY WITH IT, BUT DADDY WOULD GET UNCLE HOMERS KIDS SO MAD, THEN HE WOULD HOLD THEM DOWN AND PUT A PILLOW OVER THEIR FACE. THEY WOULD CRY TO THEIR MOTHER AND SAY, "UNCLE JOHN TRIED TO KILL ME". DADDY WOULD TAKE HIS POCKET KNIFE OUT AND TELL THEM HE WOULD CUT THEIR EARS OFF IF THEY DIDN'T LEAVE HIM ALONG AND THEY WOULD RUN AWAY.
FLOSSIE SAYS'S THAT WHEN UNCLE HOMER WOULD COME TO OUR HOUSE, I WOULD FIND SOME PLACE TO HIDE. THIS ONE DAY I HID IN MY BEDROOM IN HOPES THAT HE WOULDN'T COME IN THERE. MY BED WAS UP AGAINST THE WALL. I GOT UP ON THE BED, AS CLOSE TO THE WALL AS I COULD GET AND WIGGLED MY WAY DOWN BETWEEN THE WALL AND MATTRESS, I COULD NOT SEE HIM AND DIDN'T THINK HE COULD SEE ME, I LAYED STILL AND QUITE. HE CAME INTO THE ROOM AND JUST STOOD THERE. I STILL DIDN'T MOVE. BEFORE I EVEN KNEW WHAT HAD HAPPENED. VERY FAST HE HAD PULLED THE BED OUT FROM THE WALL AND I FELL TO THE FLOOR. AS FAST AS THAT HAD HAPPENED, SO DID THIS, HE PUSHED THE BED BACK UP AGAINST THE WALL AND LEFT ME STUCK UNDERNEATH THE BED.
MARY, TELLS THIS STORY ABOUT HER UNCLE HOMER MASON WATSON. ON ONE HALLOWEEN NIGHT, HOMER AND SOME OTHER BOYS WENT TO ONE OF THE NEIGHBORS BARN AND TOOK THEIR COW OVER TO THE SCHOOL HOUSE AND SOME HOW GOT HER UP THE SCHOOL STAIRS TO THE SECOND FLOOR. THEY TOOK HER AND LEFT HER IN THE PRINCIPLE'S OFFICE. THEY LEFT HER THERE OVER NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING WHEN THE STAFF ENTERED THE ROOM, THE COW HAD GIVEN BIRTH TO A BABY CALF. OH BOY WHAT A MESS THERE WAS!
DADDY HAD OWNED A SECOND HAND STORE THAT HE SOLD TO UNCLE HOMER AND HE LATER SOLD IT TO UNCLE ERNEST. UNCLE ERNEST AND HIS WIFE HAD BUILT LIVING QUARTERS ONTO THE BACK OF THE SOTRE. WHEN PEOPLE WOULD MOVE AND COULD NOT TAKE ALL THEIR BELONGS WITH THEM, THEY WOULD GO OVER AND BUY STUFF FOR CHEAP AND HAUL IT BACK IN THEIR TRUCKS, THEN RESALE IT. WE HAD A LOT OF NICE FURNITURE FROM THIS SOTRE TO BEAUTIFY OUR OUN HOME WITH.
WHEN WE MOVED TO CALIFORNIA, UNCLE HOMERS KIDS GAVE US A GOING AWAY PARTY. COUSIN GEORGE HAD COME OUT SIDE AND WAS STANDING NEXT TO ME (MARY). HE HAD A TINY LITTLE BIRD IN HIS HAND, BUT WOULD SHOW ME OR TELL ME WHAT IT WAS. HE KIDDED AROUND THAT IT WAS SOMETHING AWFUL! WHEN I WAS NO LONGER PAYING ANY ATTATION TO HIM, HE PUT THE THING DOWN THE BACK OF MY DRESS. I WAS SCREAMING AND DANCING AROUND THE YARD, TRYING TO SLAP MY BACK TO KILL IT OR GET IT OUT OF THERE. ALL THE OTHER KIDS STOOD AROUND ME LAUGHING. IT WAS SCRATCHING MY BACK AND I THOUGHT IT WAS BITTING ME, THIS HORRIABLE LITTLE MONSTER HE HAD HAD PUT THERE (I THOUGH IT WAS A RAT!). I FELT SO AWFUL WHEN IT FINALY FELL OUT, THANK GOODNESS I HAD NOT HURT IT. GEORGE HAD RED HAIR AND FRECKLES AND A STINKER HE WAS.
NOW OUR UNCLE ERNEST WAS SUCH A SWEET NICE GUY. NOT LIKE THE OTHERS, HE WASN'T A MEAN PLAYFUL TYPE OF GUY. HE DIDN'T PULL THE PRANKS OR JOKES, BUT HE DID LAUGH AND ENJOY THEM WHEN THEY WERE PLAYED ON OTHERS.
FLOSSIE SAY'S THAT AFTER SHE WAS GROWN, THAT UNCLE HOMER WOULD SEND HER LETTERS IN THE MAIL. SHE WOULD GET SO AGGREVATED AT THE LETTER'S THAT SHE WANTED TO TOSS THEM OUT. BUT HER CURIOUSITY WOULD BE THE BEST OF HER, SO SHE WOULD HAVE TO PLAY HIS GAME. HE WOULD WRITE A NICE LETTER THEN CUT IT INTO A JIG-SAW PUZZLE AND SHE WOULD HAVE TO PEACE IT TOGETHER. SOME TIMES HE WOULD START HIS LETTER IN THE CENTER OF THE PAGE AND MAKE IT GO AROUND IN CIRCLES, THEN CUT IT OUT, SHE SAY'S IT WAS ALWAYS WORTH THE TROUBLE.
FLOSSIE ALSO SAY'S THAT SHE WOULD CALL UNCLE HOMER, "CRAZY UNCLE HOMER". HE USE TO LIKE TO TAKE HER PLACES IN HIS CAR, BUT HE WOULD SCARE HER HALF TO DEATH. DON'T KNOW HOW WE EVER LIVED THROUGH THE DRIVE'S. I OFTEN WONDERED WHERE HE GOT HIS DRIVERS LICENSES.
MARY AND FLOSSIE BOTH REMEMBER THIS ONE REAL WELL. THEY REALIZE NOW WHY HE DID THIS. UNCLE HOMER HAD AN OLD FASHIONED BOX PHONE ON HIS DINNING ROOM WALL, ONE THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO CRANK THE HANDLE TO GET A HOLD OF THE OPERATOR TO MAKE YOUR CALL. NEXT TO THE PHONE WAS A PICTURE THE SIZE OF A MONTHLY CALANDER. IT WAS A COLORED PICTURE OF A PASTURE FULL OF COWS AND TREES ALL OVER IT. UNCLE HOMER WOULD TAKE THIS PICTURE DOWN AND LAY IT ON THE DINNING ROOM TABLE AND TELL US KIDS THAT HE WANTED US TO COUNT THE COWS. THERE WERE TO BE A CERTAIN AMOUNT AND HE COULD NOT FIND THE LAST ONE. US KIDS WOULD COUNT AND COUNT, THEN UNCLE HOMER WOULD SAY NO THAT'S NOT RIGHT, THERE IS STILL ONE MORE MISSING. SO WE WOULD COUNT THEM ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS WOULD GO ON AND ON, WE NEVER FOUND THAT COW! WE FIGURED OUT LATER THAT "THIS WAS HIS WAY TO MAKE US KIDS BE QUITE!"
DADDY WOULD WALK US INTO TOWN SO SEE THE MEDICAN SHOW. THE MAN WOULD SET HIS WAGON UP, WHICH WAS IN THE SHAPE OF A BIG WOODEN BOX HOUSE, THAT HAD TWO LITTLE WINDOWS (NO GLASS) CUT OUT ON THE SIDE. THE BACK END OPENED WHICH DISPLAYED LIKE A SMALL STORE FULL WITH BOTTLES. THE BACK DOORS HAD SHELVES THAT HELD MANY BOTTLES IN EACH. PEOPLE WOULD GET UP AND TELL HOW THE MEDICAN HAD HELPED THEM AND THEIR FAMILY'S OUT. THEY PUT ON PUPPET SHOWS WHICH US KIDS ENJOYED. I REMEMBER ONCE A CARNIVAL CAME TO TOWN, THEY DIDN'T COME OFTEN SINCE OUR TOWN WAS SO SMALL. ALL THE RIDES WERE BROUGHT IN BY WAGON LOADS. THERE WERE LOST OF FUN RIDES, NOTHING LIKE THEY HAVE TODAY.
ONCE A YEAR DADDY WOULD TAKE US ALL BY WAGON WITH THE TEAM TO THE "POTOAU COUNTY FAIR". THEY ALSO HAD RIDES THAT FLOSSIE AND I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET ON. THEY HAD ENTERTAINMENT LIKE HIGH WIRE WALKERS AND TRAPPIES PEOPLE IN TIGHTS. THE GYPSIES LADIES HAD THEIR WAGONS FIXED UP WITH THEIR LITTLE CRYSTAL BALLS, FOR THOSE THAT WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THEIR FUTURE.
I (MARY) REMEMBER WHEN US KIDS HAD FRIENDS OVER, IF DADDY DIDN'T LIKE THEM IN SOME WAY, OF IF THEY HAD SAID SOMETHING THAT HE DIDN'T LIKE. HE LOOK AT THEM AND POINTED HIS FINGER, "DO YOU WANT ME TO CUT YOUR EAR'S OFF". THEY WOULD SURE STRAIGHTEN UP, SOME EVEN RAN HOME.

In 1935 or '36 the family moved to Fontana, California. Most of the time they were there, John worked as an irrigator for Fontana Farms.
In 1950 or '51 the family moved to Crossroads, 2 miles East of Stigler on Highway 9 in Oklahoma. John bought 40 acres just behind the Crossroads Baptist Church and farmed for a living.

In 1953 he sold the land and bought a Service Station/Grocery Store on the highway at Crossroads. He sold the store to Lena's brother, Homer Watson, two years later, and moved to a house in the middle of Stigler on Highway 9. They later moved to a house at 105 N.E. 6th Street a few blocks away. He lived there until he died, in spite of having to have both legs amputated due to poor circulation. John suffered from sever asthma the last years of his life. Lena remained in the home until she had to be moved to a nursing facility after also having her legs amputated. She died in February of 1986.
John and Lena are buried in New Hope Cemetery in Spiro, Oklahoma.

7. LENA RUTH WATSON

LENA AND HER BROTHER HOMER BOTH HAD TYPHOID FEVER AT THE SAME TIME WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGSTERS. THEY BOTH LOST ALL THEIR HAIR.

LENA RUTH WATSON PARTAIN WAS BORN IN HARTFORD MO. AND LIVED THERE UNTIL SHE WAS 11 YEARS OLD. THEN HER FAMILY MOVED TO SPIRO IN 1950. JOHN'S FOLKS LIVED IN THE NEXT BLOCK AND THE TWO FAMILIES BECAME FRIENDLY NEIGHBORS. WHEN LENAS FAMILY LEFT SPIRO THEY MOVED TO VANITA OKLAHOMA THEN TO CLAREMORE OKLAHOMA WHERE THEY BOUGHT A HOME AND STAYED FOR AHILE. HEZAKIAH MASON WATSON (LENA'S DADDY) WORKED IN A CREAMERY, HE DID FARM WORK AND HELPED CLEAR LAND. UNCLE EARNEST WORKED FOR THE PHONE COMPANY AND THE FAMILY MOVED AS HE WAS TRANSFERRED, (THE FAMILY ALWAYS STAYED TOGETHER). AFTER LENA MOVED TO CLAREMORE SHE WROTE TO JOHN AND AUNT OLLIE TO KEEP IN TOUCH.

LENA WENT TO WORK FOR MR. NORTH AT THE VARITY STORE IN CLAREMORE, SHE WAS 16 YEARS OLD. JOHN USE TO GO TO CLAREMORE ON WEEKENDS TO VISIT HER. WHEN LENA WAS ABOUT 17 YEARS OLD HER FOLKS MOVED AGAIN, THIS TIME TO IOWA WHERE UNCLE ROBBIE FOLKS LIVED. UNCLE HOMER WORKED THERE ON A FARM FOR PEOPLE NAMED LEWIS (ARTHUR LEWIS) AND THE FOLKS LIVED ON THE FARM. DURNING THE TIME THEY LIVED THERE JOHN WAS FOLLOWING THE HARVEST AND SOME TIMES THE TRAINS LED AS FAR AS MINNESOTA. WHEN THE HARVEST WAS OVER THEN IT WAS TIME FOR CORN SHUCKING AND WHEN JOHN WAS SHUCKING CORN NEAR ENOUGH TO THE LEWIS FARM HE WOULD SPEND THE WEEK ENDS WITH LENA AND HER FAMILY. LENA HELPED MRS. LEWIS WITH HOUSE WORK, COOKING AND IRONING. THE LEWIS FAMILY HAD 3 CHILDREN, ONE NAMED GLEN AND LENA NAMED HER SON GLEN AFTER HIM.

LENA FOLKS MOVED TO MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA WHEN SHE WAS 19-20 YEARS OLD. SHE WENT TO WORK FOR MUSKOGES WHOLESALE COMPANY. JOHN LIVED IN SPIRO AT THE TIME AND USE TO VISIT LENA WHEN HE COULD. THEY USUALLY WENT TO MEDICINE SHOWS OR HYPNOTIC SHOWS. WHEN LENA WAS ABOUT 22 SHE TOOOK A BUS FROM MUSKOGEE TO BOKOSHE AND JOHN TOOK A BUS FROM SPIRO TO BOKOSHEE AND THEY WERE MARRIED IN BOKOSHE, OKLAHOMA, THEN THEY WENT TO SPIRO TO MAKE THEIR HOME TOGETHER.

MARY MAE (PARTAIN) RICHARDS SAYS THAT HER MOTHER LENA WAS A VERY SWEET LADY, ALL OF US THINK THE SAME ABOUT HER. SHE WAS FRIENDLY TO EVERYONE AND ALL LOVED HER BACK IN RETURN. SHE WAS VERY STRICT TO US FOUR KIDS. SHE CORRECTED FLOSSIE AND I. DADDY CORRECTED THE BOYS. I REMEMBER THIS ONE TIME, WE HAD GONE SOMEWHERE AS A FAMILY AND I WAS ACTING UP, BEING BAD (I KNOW THAT'S HARD TO BELIEVE!). ANY WAY MAMA LOOK DOWN AT ME AND WISPERED, YOUR GETTING SPANKED WHEN WE GET HOME. THOSE WORDS RUINED MY WHOLE DAY. AS SHE WAS ONE NEVER TO FORGET! IF SHE SAID SOMETHING, SHE STUCK TO HER WORD. DADDY WAS THE SAME WAY WITH THE BOY'S.

LENA WORE HER HAIR IN A BUN ON THE BACK OF HER HEAD. SHE STARTED LOOSING HER HAIR AT ONE POINT. SHE WENT TO THE DOCTOR AND HE TOLD HER THAT HER HAIR WAS TO HEAVY, THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. WHEN SHE LEFT THE DOCTORS OFFICE SHE WENT STRAIGHT TO THE BEAUTY SHOP. SHE HAD HER HAIR CUT REAL SHORT AND HAD A PERM PUT IN. BOY, WAS DADDY SHOCKED WHEN HE SAW HER, HE WAS NOT A BIT HAPPY ABOUT IT!.

SOMEONE HAD GIVEN LENA'S BOY'S GLEN AND ARTHUR A GOAT. THEY TOOK IT HOME PROUDLY AND MADE A HOME FOR IT WHERE THE OLD CHICKEN HOUSE USE TO BE. MAMA HAD HUNG ALL HER WET DISH TOWELS OUT TO DRY. WHEN WE HAD GONE OUT TO GET THEM TO BRING IN, THAT GOAT HAD EATEN HALF OF THEM, WHAT WAS LEFT WERE TORN APART OR CHEWED UP. MAMA WAS VERY UPSET WITH THE GOAT AND MADE THE BOY'S GIVE IT BACK.

WE HAD A BUNCH OF PIGS. MAMA LIKED FOR US KIDS TO BE NEAR WHEN THE BABY PIGS WERE BEING BORN. WE WATCHED SEVERAL ANIMALS GIVE BIRTH. PIGS, COWS, PUPPIES, MY FAVORITE WERE WATCHING THE CHICKENS EGGS HATCH OPEN INTO BABY CHICKS. BUT NOTHING COULD BEAT THE CUTE LITTLE BABY PIGS WITH THEIR CURLED UP LITTLE TAILS ON THEIR BACKEND, THEY MADE THE CUTIEST LITTLE SQUEAL SOUNDS. THEY JUST TICKLED ME AND FLOSSIE.

MAMA HAD FALLEN AND BROKE HER HIP. THEY HAD KICKED A BLANKET OFF THE BED DURNING THE NIGHT, WHEN SHE GOT UP SHE TRIPED OVER IT.

MAMA WAS IN HER LATE 80'S SHE HAD HER LEGS AMPUTATED.

IN 1981 MARY AND HER LOUNGEST DAUGHTER DOROTHY DROVE FROM CALIFORNIA TO EL PASO, TEXAS TO PICK NANCY AND HER TWO CHILDREN (WENDY AND FRANK) UP. THIS WAS THE MONTH AFTER NANCY'S SON (ONE OF THE TWINS) PASSED AWAY. WE DROVE TO STIGLER OKLAHOMA TO SPEND SEVERAL DAYS WITH GRANDMA (LENA PARTAIN). LENA TAUGHT HER GREAT-GRAND-DAUGHTER WENDY SUE HORNBACK HOW TO SPELL HER FIRST WORDS AT THE AGE OF 4, "PIZZA HUT"! THERE WAS A PIZZA HUT THAT SAT RIGHT BEHIND HER HOUSE AND YOU COULD SEE THE SIGN OUT HER WINDOW. ALL THE WAY BACK TO EL PASO, WENDY SPELLED "P-I-Z-Z-A  H-U-T"  ALL THE WAY HOME. WENDY REMEMBERS GRANDMA'S GIANT BED, YOU COULD NOT GET UP ON IT BY HERSELF IT WAS SO HIGH. I THINK WE ALL REMEMBER THAT BED.

I don't think our kids know what an apron IS...I remember both my Mama (Lena) and Grandma Mary Francis with their aprons, even I wore one for many years.  I can remember most all the things they used it for: The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath but, along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. They used the apron as a basket, also the end was used as a hankerchief for some. It was wonderful for drying children's tears and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for us shy kids. In the hot summer heat, it was taken off to put over the head to keep the sun off their face if they had forgoten their bonnett. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables and garden seeds. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. Fresh cut flowers to be displayed on the dinner table. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes. REMEMBER THIS! Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

ARTHUR (LENA AND JOHN'S SON),
TOLD US A STORY ABOUT WHEN HE AND HIS BROTHER GLEN WERE YOUNGER. THAT THEY WOULD ROLL THEIR OWN CIGERATES OUT OF ANYTHING THEY COULD FIND TO SMOKE. THEY WOULD TAKE THE CORNSILK RIGHTOFF THE CORN-ON-THE-COB AND ROLL IT INTO THE PAPER TO SMOKE. HE SAID IF YOU PUFFED IN TO DEEP IT WOULD CATCH ON FIRE (WHAT A CRAZY THING TO DO!) BUT THEY ENJOYED IT. THEY ALSO WOULD ROLL GRAPEVINE LEAVES AND SMOKE THEM AS WELL. THEIR SISTER MARY (THEY CALLED HER SISTER), WOULD TELL THEM, "I AM GOING TO TELL MAMMA ON YOU". THEY HAD MARY TAKE A PUFF JUST TO SEE WHAT IT TASTED LIKE FIRST. THEN SAID, GO AHEAD SISITER, TELL HER, NOW WE CAN SAY YOU SMOKED IT TO!
ART WORKED AT "SWIFT'S", A POULTRY PACKING COMPANY IN FONTANA, CALIFORNIA, FOR 9 YEARS. AND THEN IN A DUCK FARM. THEN HE GOT THE JOB DRIVING TRUCKS TRANSPORTING THE CHICKENS, TURKEYS AND DUCKS INTO DIFFERENT STORES IN LOS ANGELAS. ALICE ALSO WORKED HERE 3-4 YEARS. WHERE SHE SPLIT THE GIZZARDS AND RAN THEM TROUGH A MACHINE TO THAT CLEANED THEM OUT GOOD. SHE ALSO WORKED IN THE EGG ROOM WHERE SHE PACKED THE EGGS. SHE ENJOYED THIS PART OF THE JOB THE MOST. SHE ALSO PUT THE CHICKENS INTO PLASTIC BAGS TO BE SHIPPED OFF TO THE STORES TO BE SOLD.
ART ALSO WORKED AT "EARL MORNING" IN FONTANAON VALLEY BLVD. HE HAULED CHICKENS AND TURKEYS FOR THEM ASWELL.
HE ALSO WORKED AT "ORLVA BOWES"" IN RIVERSIDE DOING THE SAME THING. HE WORKED AT "KNUDSEN CREAMERY" IN SAN BERNARDINO WHERE HE FILLED CARTOONS WITH MILK.
ART'S HOBBIES HE ENJOYED THE MOST WERE WORKING ON OLD CARS. HE WOULD BUY A JUNKER AND THEN REBUILIT. HIS FAVORITE ONE WAS AN OLD MODAL "A" THAT HE HAD REBUILT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. ART ENJOYED WORING OUT IN THE GARDEN, IT RELAXED HIM. HE ALWAYS KEPT A NICE CROP OF VEGETABLES GOING, SISTER (MARY) SAY'S, IT WAS THE FARM BOY IN HIM.
ARTHUR WAS SELF-EMPLOYED AS AN AUTO MECHANIC. HE WAS ALWAYS ONE TO TAKE SOMETHING APART TO SEE HOW IT WORKED THEN PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. MARY AND FLOSSIE REMEMBER HIM TAKING THEIR DOLLS THAT SAID "MAMA" APART. HE CUT A SMALL OPENING IN THE BACK OF THE DOLL AND PULLED THE GIZMO OUT, OF COURSE IT DIDN'T WORK AGAIN AFTER THAT. MAMMA WAS ALWAYS GETTING ON TO HIM ABOUT TAKING THINGS APART.
AS A BOY, ART AND GLEN MADE A LOT OF THEIR OWN TOYS. MARY AND FLOSSIE LIST MANY OF THEM. WE HAD BEEN TAUGHT NEVER T USE THE WORK "NIGGER", ALTHOUGH EVERYONE USED IT BACK THEN, THAT THEY WERE NEGROS. AT THE STORE THEY SOLD A TOY CALLED A "NIGGER SHOOTER". WE CALLED IT A "BEAN FLIPS-SHOOTER". FROM A LIMB OFF THE TREE SHAPED IN A "Y", WE WOULD CUT IT OFF TO MAKE A HANDLE AND SMOOTH IT DOWN. WE WOULD TAKE A PIECE OF INTERTUB AND CUT IT INTO 2 INCH STRIPS AND TIE TO THE END'S OF THE "Y", (TODAY THEY ARE CALLED SLING-SHOTS).

HAUNTING STORY ABOUT THE HOSPITAL THAT SOME OF US KIDS AND GRANDKIDS WERE BORN IN:

San Bernardino - St Bernadine Hospital - A nun has been seen walking the halls in the oldest parts of the hospital for at least 30 years. She is seen mostly at night and on a few different floors. This part of the hospital is no longer used for patients and is empty at night. A convent is connected to this part of the hospital and a few nuns have died there.
